Case#4 11/20/07
A paralyzing concern.
You are preparing to intubate a pneumonia patient who is tiring out (BiPap failure). You elect to use succinylcholine (I mg/kg) as your paralytic agent of choice. Your choice of succinylcholine is based on the assumption that recovery from its effects will occur before oxygen desaturation occurs in case of failure to intubate or ventilate.1. How accurate is this assumption?
2. Does this differ in kids?
3. When you don’t have 5 extra minutes to pre-oxygenate, what other technique can you use?
