EMS hosted its first annual Senior Resident Conference last month for the soon to be graduating emergency medicine residents from St. John Hospital and Medical Center and St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital – Oakland Center. The attending third year doctors received valuable financial and legal information from several guest speakers specializing in law and finance.
“I remember when I graduated from residency,” recalled Dr. James M. Fox, vice president of EMS. “I was a little unprepared for the business part of working as a physician. We want to assist our residents by bringing in the experts to talk about a range of topics, from contracts to life insurance.”
Attorneys, Sam Nouhan and Fred Fresard, from the firm of Bowman & Brooke, LLC, shared some of the vital aspects of employment contracts and malpractice law with the group. Providing a wide range of financial advice were Paul Burke and Diana DiRita from Northwest Mutual as well as Oleg Savka, EMS in-house disability and life insurance specialist. The panel of experts fielded questions from the guests who wanted to know “What to expect from a financial planner” and “Do I have to settle if a lawsuit is brought against me?”
Also, adding to the discussion was Dr. Anthony Southall, president of EMS and emergency department medical director at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Southall offered his guidance during the presentations, in order to emphasize key issues such as “How to present yourself at a deposition, should the occasion occur” and “Understanding the value of the benefits your employer is providing.”
The advice shared by the presenters was enhanced by the experiences of Dr.
Fox and Dr. Southall. All in all, the group of senior residents found the
conference to be very beneficial.
